Classic Car Storage for Winter: What It Costs and What to Look For

Classic car storage inside the AircooledHut workshop

By November, it’s time to decide where your classic will spend the colder months. A good place to store it should do more than keep the rain off: it should help protect the car from damp, flat-spotted tyres, a tired battery and the other problems that can build up while it sits.

Here’s what to look for, what storage can cost, and how to prepare your car before you put it away.

What does good classic car storage include?

“Indoor” can mean anything from a dry, well-managed facility to a draughty building where cars are simply parked and left. Ask what happens to your car during storage, not just where it will be kept.

At AircooledHut, our classic car storage includes:

  • Dry indoor, climate-considered storage in a secure gated facility with an alarm.
  • 24/7 CCTV and specialist insurance cover.
  • Battery conditioning.
  • Scheduled engine turnovers up to full operating temperature.
  • Drip trays with regular oil, coolant and brake fluid checks.
  • Cars rolled manually to prevent tyre flat spots and sticking brakes.
  • Regular walk-arounds.
  • Transport to certified partner centres for MOTs and servicing, fully tracked.

These details matter. A battery left to run down may not recover properly, while tyres left in one position for months can develop flat spots. Brakes can also stick after a long lay-up. Running an engine briefly is not the same as bringing it fully up to temperature, which is why it’s worth asking exactly what a provider means by “engine checks”.

A dry building matters, too. A damp garage, or a car put away wet, can encourage corrosion, mould and electrical problems. An outdoor cover may keep off direct rain, but if it traps moisture against the paint, or the car goes under it damp, it can make matters worse. A cover is no substitute for a dry place to store the car.

Classic car storage cost: what should you budget?

Our rates are £34 per week + VAT per car and £19 per week + VAT per motorcycle. There is a minimum four-week booking, and longer-term discounts are available on request.

That works out to £136 + VAT for four weeks for a car, or £76 + VAT for four weeks for a motorcycle. For a 12-week winter stay, the car storage total at the weekly rate is £408 + VAT. Ask us about longer bookings, as discounts may be available.

Prices elsewhere vary with the level of care, access, insurance and contract length. As a broad guide, published UK prices range from around £35–£70 + VAT per week for basic indoor storage, while more involved or climate-controlled services may be priced around £180–£350 + VAT per month. These are indicative comparisons, not like-for-like quotes: check what each price includes. You can compare published information from Classicwise, Pristine Vehicle Storage and Equerry 55.

Before booking, confirm whether VAT, insurance, battery care, inspections and moving the car are included. Check the minimum term, too. A low weekly rate can cost more than expected if important care is charged separately.

Questions to ask before choosing a facility

If you’re searching for classic car storage near me or comparing car storage in Nottingham, use these questions to understand what you’re paying for:

  1. Is the building dry, and how do you manage damp and condensation?
  2. Is the car covered by specialist insurance? What does that cover, and are there limits or exclusions?
  3. Is battery conditioning included?
  4. How often do you inspect the car, and what do you check?
  5. Are cars rolled to help prevent tyre flat spots and brakes sticking?
  6. If you run engines, are they brought fully up to operating temperature?
  7. Are fluids and any leaks checked while the car is stored?
  8. What is the minimum booking, and are VAT and any additional fees clear?
  9. How much notice do I need to give before collecting the car?
  10. Can servicing or an MOT be arranged while it is in storage, and how is transport handled?

A provider should be able to explain its routine clearly. If the answer is simply “we keep an eye on it”, ask what that means in practice.

Get your car ready before storage

A few simple steps can help your car settle into its winter break:

  • Clean and dry it thoroughly. Pay attention to the underside, wheel arches and interior. Dirt and moisture left on the car can cause problems over time.
  • Fill the tank, unless your vehicle’s manufacturer or a trusted specialist recommends a different approach for its fuel system. Follow any guidance on using suitable fuel or a stabiliser.
  • Check tyre pressures against the vehicle’s recommended figures. Ask the storage provider whether it checks pressures during the stay.
  • Don’t leave the handbrake on. Ask the provider how it will keep the car safely stationary without leaving the brakes engaged.
  • Remove personal items and let the provider know about any quirks, starting instructions or concerns.

Tell the storage team about known leaks, electrical issues or anything that needs special attention. A little information at handover can help them look after the car properly.

Bringing it out of storage

When spring comes, resist the temptation to jump straight into a long drive. Check the tyres, fluid levels, battery condition and brakes first. Look around the car for leaks, and check that lights and other electrical items work.

If the car has been stored for a while, or anything feels wrong, arrange a proper recommissioning check before driving it far. Our recommissioning and inspection service covers the checks needed to wake a stored car up safely. You can also book our £99 + VAT Classic Car Health Check for a workshop-based inspection of the car’s fluids, structure, electrics and mechanical condition.
